Team Driftless is planning to host a drum making workshop on Sunday, May 28th, 2023 from 9:00 am - noon.
Drums are among the oldest and most widely used musical instruments, dating back nearly 7,000 years. Drums have long been an important part of ceremonies and cultural gatherings all over the world. Whether you use it during meditation or as part of other self-care rituals, such as massage/energy/sound bath practices, the drum can be a beautiful and powerful ally that mimics the human heartbeat and rhythms of the earth.
In this workshop you will learn how to create your own rawhide drumhead and mallet. We will guide you through the drum creation process. You will cut your own drum skin and lacing from a prepared hide. There will be several hides to choose from, so you can choose what feels right or calls to you. Be prepared to get dirty. While the hides are clean, they will be wet for workability, and the process of cutting your own lacing can be tiresome for the hands. We will be available to assist.
We hope you come away from the day filled with the love of community, and with a beautiful, functional piece of art and medicine that will be with you for years to come.
Materials are provided. Drum hoops are 15". Rawhide, natural deer leather and a variety of sticks will be supplied to create your drum and mallet. The event is being held at our beautiful space in Argyle, WI. We hope to work outside, in the little park right next to the Pecatonica River, if the weather is conducive. If the weather is a challenge then we will work inside the tannery.
Masks are optional. Please do not come if you are feeling ill.
For those traveling, there are several farm stays and a couple of small hotels in the area.
Space is limited. We are capping the workshop at twelve (12) participants. This number allows for an intimate learning environment and for stops, starts, questions, and guidance. We hope for class to be a safe space for people to inquire, release, practice, relax, and learn.
Price for the workshop will be $225, with $100 due now to reserve your spot, and the remainder due at the time of the class. Listing is for the deposit only to reserve your spot. Final amount of $125 will be due at time of class, payable by check, cash, or card.
**Cancellations: We know life comes up and poses challenges. Cancellations up to 2 weeks before the event will be fully refunded. Cancellations less than 2 weeks before the class forfeit the deposit.**
