It’s pumpkin spice, apple cider, and chrysanthemum time! That means we gardeners are starting to put our garden beds to bed for their long winter’s nap. Fall is a great time to rejuvenate your soil by adding amendments like compost.
Let’s talk about a new idea for your fall garden: Woollets, wool pellets!
Woollets are amazing for the growing season. The wool pellets hold water in your soil and as they break down they create space in your soil (aeration) and they release all their macro and micronutrients to the plants.
Woollets are a great addition to all your fall plantings it’s easy to add Woollets in with your garlic.
Woollets are also an excellent addition to the garden in autumn. Top dressing your perennials with Woollets adds an extra layer of protection to your plants for the winter cold ahead. A layer of fluffy wool insulates the roots and holds the moisture from those autumn rains, giving it time to soak in deep before the snow falls. Woollets will break down over the winter, enriching and building your soil, and giving your plants ready access to nutrients when they start growing in early spring.
In colder zones, like here in Wisconsin, you may also be adding a layer of mulch to protect sensitive plants from the sub zero winter temperatures. When you do, go ahead and mix in some Woollets for further protection. You will have the added bonus of nutrients that are readily available in the spring.
